So, given my jam-packed schedule that I will talk about in more detail in this blog post, I haven't had as much time as I had hoped to update my blog on the various random activities we do. Here they are- So, every week we have a basic skeleton of a schedule that is constant throughout the weeks and the rest of the time is filled up with other one time activities and excursions. Here is an overview of the basic skeleton-
Sunday-Thursday 8:15-12:35 Class (3 hours Modern Standard Arabic (formal) and 1 hour colloquial Levantine Arabic) Sunday-Linguistic Workshop-2 hrs as a group with our Resident Directors (RDs) going over different language exercises or topics depending on what topics are pertinent that week Monday-Ikteshaf Presentations- Arabic oral partner presentations on various topics about Jordan/the Arab world (eg. Jordanian Diplomacy, Ethnic Minorities, Religion's Role in Daily Life). We work on these throughout the week and then come together and present to one another. We have the same topic for the entire trip and we continue to build on it throughout until we have a 15 min completely memorized presentation by the end. Tuesday-Jordan Today- We visit different Jordanian NGOS, government organizations, companies, research centers etc. to get a better idea of modern day Jordan and the different issues that affect it. Wednesday- Group and Individual Meetings- As a group, we all sit down and have a discussion about concerns or frustrations we have written anonymously on notecards. This is followed by individual meetings with our RDs where we can talk about any positive or negative things going on and they give us feedback from our teachers on our performance in class. Thursday-We usually go out after school as a group and go out to dinner together later because this is the start of the weekend. Friday-We usually have a day long outing. Saturday-This is usually more a day of rest. We have the opportunity to sign up for tutoring slots with Nadia, the amazing daughter of our local coordinator, and we have lots of time to get ready for the school week ahead, do homework or go out on our own in small groups. As I said before, this is only the starting point. Every week we have tons of other outings and activities and opportunities to explore Amman with our friends. I will get more in depth about these excursions in a coming post. Bye, Sophia
